How to relieve a hangover

Although the best way to avoid a hangover is to moderate alcohol consumption or abstain, there are some strategies that can help alleviate its effects once it has occurred.

A hangover is a set of unpleasant symptoms that usually arise after consuming excessive alcohol. These symptoms include headache, intense thirst, nausea, upset stomach, fatigue, and irritability.

Although the best way to avoid a hangover is not to drink alcohol or do so in moderation, there are some tips that can help relieve it if it has already occurred.

Drinking water

Alcohol causes dehydration, so it is important to replace lost fluids. Drinking water before, during, and after consuming alcohol can prevent or reduce the intensity of a hangover. You can also drink other isotonic drinks or herbal infusions that help hydrate and calm the stomach.

Eat light foods

Alcohol irritates the digestive system and can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Therefore, it is recommended to eat soft and easy-to-digest foods, such as toast, crackers, fruit, yogurt or broth. Avoid fatty, spicy or highly seasoned foods that may worsen the discomfort.

Take analgesics

Alcohol dilates blood vessels in the brain and causes inflammation, which results in headaches. To relieve it, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, always following the instructions on the package insert and without mixing them with more alcohol. Avoid aspirin, as it can irritate the stomach and increase the risk of bleeding.

Rest

Alcohol disrupts sleep and reduces its quality, which contributes to feelings of tiredness and lack of concentration. Therefore, it is important to get enough sleep and rest in a quiet, dark environment. If you have to work or do some activity the next day, you can take a nap to regain energy.

Avoid consuming more alcohol

Although some people believe that having a drink the next day can help cure a hangover, the truth is that it only delays the symptoms and aggravates them. It is best to refrain from drinking more alcohol until your body has fully recovered.

These are some tips to relieve a hangover, but keep in mind that they are not foolproof nor are they a substitute for medical care. If the hangover is very severe or is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, difficulty breathing, seizures or loss of consciousness, you should see a doctor immediately.
